Prof. Christoph Baranec's Visit to TARA/ASIAA

In May 2026, TARA and ASIAA invited Prof. Christoph Baranec, principal investigator of the Robo-AO and Robo-AO-2 adaptive optics systems, to visit Taiwan for a series of scientific and technical exchanges, with financial support provided by ASIAA. The visit focused on the development of adaptive optics (AO) capability in Taiwan, especially the MATA project at Lulin Observatory, and provided an opportunity to connect international AO experience with Taiwan's emerging instrumentation program.

During the visit, Prof. Baranec gave a special talk on Robo-AO and the development of highly efficient autonomous AO systems. In addition to the public presentation in IANCU, several focused technical discussions were held with members from TARA, ASIAA, and National Central University. These discussions covered both the scientific motivation and the engineering pathway for building a compact AO prototype on a one-meter-class telescope.

The visit helped translate the experience of an operational autonomous AO system into concrete design choices for MATA. Rather than remaining at the conceptual level, the discussions directly informed decisions on wavefront-sensor architecture, calibration strategy, mechanical integration, real-time control, and the roadmap toward laboratory closed-loop testing and future on-sky engineering observations at Lulin Observatory.

Through this exchange, TARA strengthened its technical connection with the Robo-AO team and gained practical guidance for building Taiwan's own AO prototype. The collaboration also supports the long-term goal of using MATA as a pathfinder for future AO development on TP2m and larger telescope facilities.

2026 年 5 月,TARA 與中研院天文所邀請 Robo-AO 與 Robo-AO-2 自動化調適光學系統主持人 Christoph Baranec 教授來臺訪問,並由中研院天文所提供經費支持,進行一系列學術與技術交流。本次訪問聚焦於臺灣自適應光學(Adaptive Optics, AO)能力的建立,特別是鹿林天文台 MATA 系統的發展,並將國際成熟 AO 系統的實作經驗引入臺灣正在推動的儀器研發計畫。

訪問期間,Baranec 教授以 Robo-AO 與高效率自動化 AO 系統的發展為主題進行專題演講。除了在中央大學天文所公開演講外,他也與 TARA、中研院天文所及中央大學師生進行多場深入技術討論,內容涵蓋一米級望遠鏡 AO 原型系統的科學目標、工程限制與實作路徑。

本次訪問的核心意義,是將已成功運作的自動化 AO 系統經驗,轉化為 MATA 的具體設計判斷。討論並未停留在概念層次,而是直接回饋到波前感測器架構、校準策略、機械整合、即時控制,以及後續實驗室閉迴路測試與鹿林望遠鏡實地工程觀測的規劃。

透過此次交流,TARA 與 Robo-AO 團隊建立更直接的技術連結,也為臺灣自有 AO 原型系統的建立取得重要實作經驗。此合作亦有助於將 MATA 作為未來 TP2m 以及更大型望遠鏡 AO 發展的先導驗證平台。
