πŸ“– Project Description

Dust exists in the Universe. Dust particles are expected to form in high density regions in galaxies with a lot of gas and metals. However, observational measurements show that there is dust outside of galaxies. How did dust escape from galaxies and what are the physical mechanisms behind such a phenomenon? These questions remain to be addressed.

In this project, we will address these questions by obtaining novel measurements of dust properties outside of galaxies in the circumgalactic medium (CGM). We will first develop a new methodology, combining statistical techniques and large astronomical datasets, for detecting and mapping the dust distribution around galaxies. By utilizing the new method, we will measure the dust properties as a function of galaxy properties, such as stellar mass, star-formation rate, etc. The success of this program will allow us to obtain the most precise measurements of dust properties in the CGM, providing novel information that reveals the origins of cosmic dust outside of galaxies.

In this project, the student will (1) work on big astronomical datasets, (2) develop statistical techniques, and (3) learn the astrophysics of galaxy evolution and statistics.
